OUR HATS ARE OFF TO…!

Richard and Lois Errante and Kyong-Hee Cho for the glorious concert at St. Matthew's church this month in honor of Wilton's Bicentennial Celebration, with special thanks to Wilton's Eugenie Rocherolle, whose liltingly lovely "An American Rhapsody" premiered at the May 18 event. Over 200 music lovers attended. It couldn't have been done without the herculean organizational skills of Magdelen Livesey and our most generous sponsors: The Wilton Bank, Cortina Learning International, Inc., and The Village Market. Plus our Patrons: The Ridgefield Bank, Realty Seven, Champ Direct Mail Printing Company, Gregory and Adams, May Hickey/Coldwell Banker, Regency Limousine, Wallflowers and Dr. and Mrs. Douglas Bunnell. Thanks to all!

Rick Parisot, a Wilton professional artisan, for creating the magnificent steel sculpture of the American flag to be displayed through Wilton in the Memorial Day parade. The eight by seven-foot "artistic rendition" of the flag will be painted red, white and blue and

will ride atop the Wilton Arts Council's float. Arts Council members have also created a newly painted banner honoring Wilton's 200th year and in addition to our regular banner, one commemorating our 25th anniversary.

WAC SCHOLARSHIPS, JUNE 5.

Talented Wilton High School students who are gifted in the arts will be awarded scholarships from the Wilton Arts Council 2002 High-School Arts Fund. The event will take place at the new Wilton High School Auditorium Performing Arts Center on June 5. Scholarships will be awarded in the following categories: art, photography, ceramics, music (orchestra, band, or voice). And remember, it's never too early to start swelling the coffers for the 2003 Awards. Just send your checks to The Wilton Arts Council. P.O. Box 7161, Wilton, CT 06897, and note on your check the art category of your choice. Plus, don't forget to order your WAC T-shirts. Only $10 each with the WAC logo in proud purple. Profits go towards scholarships. Be sure to specify size (XL, L, M, S)!

JULY 4, PAINT THE DAY RED!

Discover your inner artist! Bring your colored chalk and creativity to the Cider Mill School parking lot at 10:30 AM, July 4. Everyone's invited. No prizes, but lots of fun. Later, from 4 to 7 PM, help Wilton kids let loose in the Arts Tent on the baseball field.  Paint faces, twist animal balloons, create mosaic tile "masterpieces". Be a caveman and draw on the wall. It'll be a tent full of fun, with bubble blowing, clowns, pipe-cleaner art and music, music, music. Hear the TrebleMakers at 5:30 PM, followed by a 100 voice chorus and 100 piece band! Now there's a way to celebrate Independence Day!

Happy Birthday to Us!

Did you know that the Wilton Arts Council is now celebrating its 25th Anniversary? The May 16 issue of The Wilton Bulletin reported that the first slate of officers was nominated on May 18, 1977 with Stuart Smith selected as the First Chairman. Other officers included: Jean Calahan, Vice Chairman; Nancy Brown, Recording Secretary; Bernadette Flory, Corresponding Secretary; and John Parker, Treasurer.

Further research pinpoints other early contributors to the Arts in Wilton: the second President was Howie Colwell, followed by Bernard Ryan, Dol Christison and Bob Saunders. The original bylaws established the council as a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation whose intent was to remain independent of funding by tax money from the Town of Wilton.

If anyone has more information, for instance the logo, first sponsored art show, first musical production, etc. or on the founding of the Wilton Arts Council, please forward it to PO Box 7161, Wilton, CT  06897.

We hope everyone has a peaceful, restful and happy summer.  This is the time to relax and enjoy the warm weather and joys of summer.  Get out and do some painting, dance in the sunshine, plant a beautiful flower, take some great pictures for the fall photography show, do something you’ve wanted to do for a long time. Start a new hobby, like painting, singing, acting, ceramics or photography.  But above all, have fun with whatever you plan.
